Manitou Cliff Dwellings

Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a museum in Manitou Springs featuring reconstructed Puebloan structures where visitors can move through rooms and explore traditional building methods. The site includes two museum buildings and a gift shop along with the walkable cliff dwelling replicas.

The site opened to the public in 1907 as a way to preserve and display the architectural knowledge of Pueblo communities from the American Southwest. This early effort helped establish how such heritage could be documented and shared with visitors.

The exhibits show objects from daily Pueblo life such as pottery, tools, and weapons that tell how families managed their households. These items help visitors understand the routines and crafts that shaped community life.

The site sits about 5 miles (8 km) west of Colorado Springs along US Highway 24 and is straightforward to reach by car. Wear comfortable walking shoes since exploring the structures involves climbing and moving through tight spaces.

Unlike typical museums, visitors can touch and enter the reconstructed structures directly, which creates a hands-on understanding of how people built their homes. This direct interaction with the architecture makes the historical building methods feel real and immediate.
