Steamboat Lake State Park, State park in Routt County, Colorado.
Steamboat Lake State Park is a Colorado state park built around a large reservoir in the northern Rocky Mountains, near the town of Steamboat Springs. The water sits at around 8,100 feet (2,470 m) above sea level and is framed by pine forests, open meadows, and the cone-shaped Hahns Peak to the north.
The land around the lake was used by the Ute people for hunting long before settlers arrived and established ranches in the late 1800s. The reservoir was created by damming Willow Creek, and the park officially opened in 1967.
The park draws families, anglers, and boaters who come back year after year, treating it as a regular part of outdoor life in northern Colorado. Hahns Peak, the old volcano visible from the shore, has long served as a reference point for people moving through this part of the Rockies.
The park is busiest in summer, so arriving early in the day helps to find a good spot at the beach or boat dock. Camping reservations are recommended well in advance, especially for weekends.
The lake can take on a noticeable greenish color during certain seasons due to natural algae, something many visitors notice from the shore. The park also sits at the foot of Hahns Peak, an extinct volcano that hikers can climb in a few hours for a wide view of the surrounding valleys.
