Northgate Canyon

The North Platte River flows through a 9.8-mile canyon passage between Routt Access, Colorado, and Six-Mile Gap, Wyoming, with numerous Class III+ rapids.

The canyon developed as the North Platte River carved through layers of rock over millions of years, creating steep walls and diverse geological formations.

Local rafting guides maintain a tradition of naming the major rapids, including Windy Hole, Cowpie, Narrow Falls, Tootsie Roll, and Stovepipe, reflecting their characteristics.

Rafting expeditions operate from late May to June, requiring participants to be at least ten years old and maintain a moderate fitness level.

Pine bark beetle infestations have altered the surrounding forest landscape, creating a distinct ecological environment along the canyon walls.
