Red Buttes Observatory, University astronomical observatory in Laramie, Wyoming, United States
Red Buttes Observatory is a research facility of the University of Wyoming located south of Laramie, equipped with a 0.6-meter Ritchey-Chrétien Cassegrain telescope. The site sits at an elevation of around 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) and uses modern cameras and near-infrared detectors for sky observations.
The observatory was founded in 1994 by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wyoming as a second research facility for the institution. It was built to provide a more modern and better-equipped observation site for teaching and research purposes.
The observatory plays an important role in astronomy education at the university, allowing students to work with professional research equipment and develop real observational skills. Many visitors find themselves drawn back to the field because of hands-on experiences gained here.
The facility uses automated systems that can be controlled remotely, making observations flexible and efficient. Visitors should know that the high elevation and exposed prairie location mean weather conditions can change quickly.
The entrance is marked by old wagon ruts left behind by historic cattle drives and settler routes crossing the prairie. These visible tracks remind visitors that the location once sat along an important travel route before becoming a site for modern sky research.
