Fort Halleck, Military fort in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States.
Fort Halleck was a military post built near Elk Mountain at an elevation of about 7,800 feet (2,400 meters) in the mid-1800s. The installation included stables, soldier barracks, and a medical facility distributed across the site.
The post was established in 1862 by the 11th Ohio Cavalry to protect travelers and mail carriers. It served as a checkpoint during the American Civil War to secure supply routes and communication lines.
The military post maintained order between Native American tribes and settlers while supporting the transportation of supplies between Kansas and Salt Lake City.
The site is located at a mountain pass between Colorado and Wyoming, making it an important reference point for visitors navigating the area. The exposed high-altitude terrain is accessible year-round, though you should bring warm clothing as conditions can be cool.
Only one original building still stands at the site, believed to have been the blacksmith shop used by soldiers. A marker indicates where the military cemetery was located when the post operated.
