Anthony Lakes, Ski resort in Blue Mountains, Oregon
Anthony Lakes is a ski resort in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon, sitting at around 7,100 feet (2,165 m) elevation. The resort has slopes for all skill levels, a base lodge with rental equipment, food service, and a small number of lifts to access the mountain.
The area around Anthony Lakes was developed as a ski destination in the mid-20th century, when winter sports began to draw visitors into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Before that, the surrounding region was better known for mining and logging activity in the Blue Mountains.
Anthony Lakes is well known among families and schools from northeastern Oregon, where many children learn to ski here for the first time. Local high schools use the slopes for competitions during winter, giving the place a community feel that larger resorts rarely have.
The resort sits at high elevation, so warm layers and proper winter gear are important even on clear days. It is located away from major cities, so planning ahead and allowing extra travel time is a good idea before heading up.
On certain Mondays between January and March, a group can rent the whole mountain exclusively, with no other skiers on the slopes. This makes it one of the few places in the US where an entire ski area can be booked privately, which some visitors use for proposal events.
