Grand Mogul, Mountain summit in Sawtooth Range, Idaho, US
Grand Mogul is a summit in the Sawtooth Range standing at 9,733 feet (2,966 m), marked by steep rock faces and snow-filled gullies that create distinct climbing challenges. The mountain's structure offers multiple routes that vary in difficulty and terrain.
The first documented ascent occurred in 1957 when climbers from the Iowa Mountaineers reached the summit via the North Face Snow Couloir. Since then it has become an established training destination for climbers developing alpine skills.
The peak draws climbers interested in testing themselves on rock and snow, and its position in the Sawtooth Range makes it a landmark visible from many nearby trails and lakes.
You can hike to the base from Redfish Lake on a trail that takes several hours to complete, or use the boat shuttle service running through the summer months to shorten the approach. Both options start from the lake area, which has parking and basic facilities.
A significant earthquake in March 2020 reshaped portions of the mountain and created new rock formations that continue to affect climbing routes. This geological event highlights how active seismic forces remain in the Sawtooth region.
