Sawtooth Wilderness, Protected wilderness area in central Idaho, United States.
The Sawtooth Wilderness spans 217,088 acres of mountainous terrain containing 57 peaks above 10,000 feet and nearly 400 alpine glacier-formed lakes.
The area received federal protection in 1937 as Sawtooth Primitive Area, and in 1972 President Nixon designated it as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes this region for having some of the clearest air measurements recorded in the contiguous United States.
The wilderness requires special permits for camping and fishing activities, while motorized vehicles, bicycles, and mechanical equipment remain prohibited throughout the area.
Gray wolves returned to the forest through a reintroduction program in the 1990s, restoring a critical predator species to the ecosystem.
