Mountain Home Air Force Base, Military air installation in Elmore County, United States
Mountain Home Air Force Base is a military installation in Elmore County, Idaho, positioned about 12 miles southwest of the town of Mountain Home. The facility serves as home to the 366th Fighter Wing and covers a wide expanse of high desert terrain in southern Idaho.
Construction began in 1942 when the facility was established during World War II as a training center for B-17 bomber crews. After the war the site shifted through several military roles before settling into its current function as a fighter base.
The base maintains active partnerships with international forces, including a permanent training program with the Republic of Singapore Air Force since 1998.
The installation sits at an elevation of roughly 3,000 feet (910 meters) above sea level and is accessible via Interstate 84. Public access is generally restricted, though occasional open house events or organized tours may be available.
During the mid-1980s two exceptionally large radar systems were installed here, ranking among the most powerful of their era. These systems operated for only a short period before being removed, yet they left a notable mark in the history of air defense technology.
