Lewis and Clark Caverns, Limestone show cave in Jefferson County, Montana
Lewis and Clark Caverns is a cave system in Jefferson County, Montana. The limestone formations run through several chambers across a vertical distance of roughly 1,000 feet (300 meters).
Dan Morrison discovered and developed the cave in 1900, originally naming it Limespur Cave. The federal government later claimed ownership through legal proceedings.
The Civilian Conservation Corps workers constructed pathways and infrastructure during the 1930s, making the caverns accessible for public exploration.
The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) throughout the year. Visitors need to climb 600 steps during guided tours.
Steam rising from the cave entrance led hunters Tom Williams and Bert Pannel to discover these formations in 1892. Workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps built pathways and infrastructure during the 1930s to make the cave accessible to visitors.
