Doncaster Round Barn, Round barn in Twin Bridges, Montana.
Doncaster Round Barn is a three-story wooden structure with a circular design located near Twin Bridges. The building measures 100 feet across and reaches 48 feet in height, positioned close to the Jefferson River Valley.
Noah Armstrong built the barn in 1882 for breeding racehorses, including one named Spokane. That horse became the first Montana-born animal to win the Kentucky Derby in 1889.
The circular arrangement of stalls reflects how 19th-century horse breeders organized their operations for efficiency and care. Walking through the barn, visitors can still sense its past importance to the local farming community.
The first floor holds 26 box stalls arranged around a 20-foot-wide circular track. Each stall opens directly to its own outdoor paddock for the animals.
The barn included an elevator system and a windmill-powered water supply. Water flowed by gravity directly to each individual horse stall.
