Shuswap Lake Marine Provincial Park encompasses 23 distinct sites around the lake, featuring both land-based locations and water-accessible areas across 896 hectares of protected territory. The park combines beaches, coves, and rocky shorelines into one connected network for recreation and conservation.
The park was established in 1980 to protect the natural shoreline of Shuswap Lake, where Secwepemc First Nations communities have lived for generations. Its creation followed growing awareness of the need to preserve lakes and their coastal ecosystems in the region.
The park holds numerous archaeological sites with pictographs and kekulis that show the long presence of Secwepemc First Nations in this region. These locations let visitors today understand the deep connection Indigenous peoples have to the lake.
Many sites are only reachable by boat, while others can be reached by road, so plan your route ahead of time. Camping operates on a first-come, first-served basis without advance reservations.
The lake has a distinctive H-shape formed by four main arms that converge at Cinnemousun Narrows. This shape is the result of extensive glacial scouring that shaped the landscape over thousands of years.
