Lone Pine State Park is a 270-acre day-use recreation area on the southwest side of Kalispell, Montana. It holds 7.5 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and horseback riding. The land rises to about 1,035 metres, with wooded slopes and views over the Flathead Valley.
The park came into being in the 1940s after a local family transferred their sheep ranch property to the state with special conditions. This gift was tied to the requirement that the place become a center for environmental education.
The park began with 162 acres donated in 1941 by Ernest and Hazel White, who required that the land be used for public recreation and to teach the benefits of conservation. That teaching purpose still shapes how the park is presented to school and community groups.
