Kianuko Provincial Park, Provincial park in Central Kootenay, Canada.
Kianuko Provincial Park is a large wilderness area in the western Purcell Mountains with a rugged landscape of mountain peaks, alpine lakes, and deep valleys. The terrain shifts between open high plateaus and steep forested slopes that make hiking demanding.
The area received official protection in 1995, creating a refuge for wildlife including caribou, moose, and grizzly bears. This designation recognized the region's ecological importance for threatened animal populations.
The Ktunaxa First Nation maintains deep connections to this territory, which has served their communities through hunting and gathering practices across generations.
The park is only accessible on foot, either through hikes from nearby Lockhart Creek Park or via unmaintained forest roads leading to the park boundary. Visitors should be well prepared, as trails are unmarked and unmaintained, and the terrain can be challenging.
Haystack Mountain is the tallest of four named peaks in the park at over 2600 meters, offering views across the entire wilderness area. This summit draws experienced hikers willing to spend multiple days in the remote landscape.
