Springbank, Alberta, Rural suburb in Calgary, Canada
Springbank is a rural residential area on Calgary's western edge in Alberta, where large estate properties and agricultural lots sit across gently rolling prairie land. The lots are generous in size, leaving plenty of open space between homes and fields.
The area took its name from Springbank Creek in 1887 when the first school district was established for early settlers near the water source. The school marked the start of organized settlement in what had until then been open ranching land.
Springbank Park For All Seasons is a community facility where residents gather for indoor sports, curling, and leisure activities throughout the year. It sits among the large private properties and acts as one of the few shared spaces where neighbors regularly meet.
The Calgary/Springbank Airport sits within the area and can serve as a useful landmark for navigation, as it lies close to the Trans-Canada Highway. Because properties are spread out and public transit is limited, a personal vehicle is practically necessary to get around.
The Springbank Airport is not a commercial airport but a general aviation and business airport used mainly by private planes and charter flights to take pressure off Calgary's main airport. The mix of private runways and large horse properties nearby makes this one of the few places near a major city where aircraft and equestrian farms share the same landscape.
