Kinbrook Island Provincial Park, Provincial park on Lake Newell in Alberta, Canada
Kinbrook Island Provincial Park is a provincial park on the eastern shore of Lake Newell, in southern Alberta, with forested areas, wetlands, and open shoreline. The park has camping areas, walking trails, and direct access to the water.
Lake Newell formed after the Bassano Dam was built in the early 20th century, when water filled a dry basin. The park opened in 1951, as the area became a destination for recreation in the surrounding region.
The park attracts birdwatchers from across the region who come to observe over 270 bird species in their natural habitat. Walking trails guide visitors through different landscapes where birds can be spotted throughout the seasons.
The park is a short drive from the town of Brooks, where shops and services are easy to find. Visiting in summer gives the best access to swimming and the shoreline, while spring and fall are good for watching birds.
Lake Newell is the largest human-made lake in Alberta, created for irrigation rather than power generation. Despite its artificial origin, it now supports a full ecosystem with over 270 bird species recorded in and around the park.
