Oldman River valley parks system, Park system in Lethbridge, Canada
The Oldman River valley parks system is a network of eight green spaces in Lethbridge that stretches across a valley below the city's main level. The area offers walking and cycling paths, campgrounds, playgrounds, and various resting areas for visitors.
The area was long settled until severe flooding around the turn of the 20th century drove people away to higher ground in Lethbridge. Over the following decades, this abandoned land gradually transformed into the park system we see today.
The nature centre at the site focuses on teaching visitors about the plants and animals that live in the river valley. Local families visit throughout the year to learn about the ecosystems they can explore in this green space.
The area is easy to walk through and features separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists that are clearly marked. There are seating areas and shaded spots distributed regularly throughout to welcome visitors of all abilities.
The area is home to the only known location worldwide where three species of poplar naturally interbreed and create unusual leaf patterns. This botanical oddity makes the valley a remarkable spot for nature watchers and plant lovers.
