Galt Museum & Archives, Regional history museum in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada
The Galt Museum and Archives is a regional museum in Lethbridge housing more than 20,000 objects and 300,000 documents. The collections tell the story of southwestern Alberta's development through permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The museum began as a Scientific and Historical Society formed in 1888 that moved through several locations over time. The current building opened in 1964 and has served as the permanent home since then.
In 2022, local Niitsitapi Elders gave the museum the Blackfoot name Akaisamitohkanao'pa, which means eternal gathering place. This name reflects how the community views the institution today.
Visitors can book research appointments to examine photographs, documents, and recorded interviews from the collections. Both public and private archives are available for those interested in detailed study.
A major expansion in 2004 added the Discovery Hall and Education Centre, significantly expanding educational programming. These spaces today host diverse learning activities for visitors of all ages.
