Buffalo, County seat in Johnson County, Wyoming
Buffalo is the county seat of Johnson County in northeastern Wyoming and sits at 1,416 meters elevation where the Bighorn Mountains meet the Great Plains. The town spreads along several parallel streets with low brick and wood buildings, while public facilities and businesses line North Main Street.
The settlement began in the 1870s as a stop on the Bozeman Trail and served soldiers and travelers heading to Montana Territory. Later it grew into an administrative and trading center for the surrounding ranches and farms of the region.
The Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum preserves objects from the time of native peoples, military campaigns, and early settlers. Visitors can trace how different groups shaped this part of Wyoming.
Johnson County government buildings are located on North Main Street and open to the public on weekdays. Visitors find parking along the main street and on some side streets in the center.
The Occidental Hotel from 1880 retains its original construction and houses a saloon interior from Wyoming territorial days. Guests and visitors can examine the old wooden floors and the historic bar.
