Wind Cave National Park contains a network of underground passages extending over 147 miles through limestone formations in South Dakota.
President Theodore Roosevelt established Wind Cave as the sixth national park of the United States and first cave national park in 1903.
The Lakota people named the cave Washun Niya, considering it a sacred site and the emergence point of humans in their traditional stories.
Visitors can access the cave through guided tours, explore 30 miles of hiking trails, and stay at Elk Mountain Campground throughout the year.
The cave system contains 95 percent of known calcite boxwork formations on Earth and maintains natural barometric breathing through surface openings.
