Elk Mountain Campground

Elk Mountain Campground is a facility with 63 sites positioned at the boundary between ponderosa pine forest and open prairie within Wind Cave National Park. The location sits where two contrasting landscapes meet directly adjacent to one another.

Wind Cave National Park, which contains this campground, received federal protection in 1903 as the eighth national park established in the United States. The facility was created as part of these early conservation efforts for the region.

The amphitheater hosts ranger programs during summer months where visitors learn about the natural and cultural history of the area. These evening sessions offer insights into how the landscape functions as a transition zone between different ecosystems.

The campground provides flush toilets and drinking water from late spring through early fall when most facilities operate. Reservations can be made online with credit card payment through the Recreation.gov system.

In September visitors gather at observation points near the campground to hear Rocky Mountain elk bugling during their mating season. This is a rare opportunity to witness this natural behavior in the animals' native habitat.
