Khutzeymateen Inlet, Protected inlet in British Columbia, Canada
Khutzeymateen Inlet is a protected waterway in British Columbia that winds through steep mountain valleys surrounded by high peaks. The combination of deep waters, rocky shores, and thick forests creates a natural habitat for various animals and fish.
The inlet was first recorded by Europeans in 1793 when explorers sailed along the Pacific coast. Centuries later, authorities recognized its importance and established it as a protected sanctuary.
The Coast Tsimshian people have lived by these waters for generations, using the forests, rivers, and shores as part of their daily life. You can see evidence of this long connection to the land throughout the area.
Access is by boat only, and visitors must register before entering the area. Weather can change quickly due to the mountains, so check conditions and come prepared for rain and cool temperatures.
The inlet is home to one of the largest groups of grizzly bears in Canada, which come here to fish for salmon in the rivers. The sanctuary was specifically created to protect these large animals.
