Gitlaxt'aamiks, Indigenous village in Nass Valley, British Columbia, Canada.
Gitlaxt'aamiks is a Nisga'a community in the Nass Valley in British Columbia with modern public buildings and administrative facilities. The village includes schools, health services, and residential areas arranged on elevated ground.
The village was relocated to its current site in the 1970s after flooding damaged the original settlement. This resettlement led to the construction of entirely new infrastructure in a safer location.
The Unity Totem Pole, erected in 1977 near the school, represents the first totem carved in the Nass Valley since the 1800s. This monument marks the return of a cultural practice that had been interrupted for generations.
The village is reached by paved road from Terrace, with the drive taking roughly two hours. The best time to visit is during warmer months when road conditions are most stable.
The village sits above an extensive lava field created when the Tseax Cone erupted in the 18th century. This geological feature has fundamentally shaped the landscape of the entire region.
