Carcross, Historical settlement at Bennett Lake in Yukon, Canada.
Carcross is a small settlement located at the northern end of Bennett Lake, about 74 kilometers south of Whitehorse. Mountains rise from both sides of the surrounding lakes, creating a striking frame around the community.
The White Pass and Yukon Railway made this settlement a key stopping point in 1898, serving travelers and goods across the region. The name changed from Caribou Crossing to Carcross in 1904 to avoid mail delivery confusion.
The Tagish and Tlingit have long called this place home, and their presence remains visible in local names and how the community relates to its surroundings. Walking through the settlement, you sense this connection in the way people live with the land.
Carcross Airport serves private aircraft, and the Klondike Highway connects the settlement year-round to Whitehorse and nearby communities. Most local services are clustered in the town center, so everything is within walking distance.
In the northern area sits the Carcross Desert, an unusual expanse of sand dunes surrounded by the boreal forest typical of the region. This surprising natural formation offers a stark contrast to the forested landscape most visitors expect to find here.
