Pigeon Lake, Lake in central Alberta, Canada.
Pigeon Lake is a large body of water in central Alberta connected to the Battle River system through Pigeon Lake Creek. The lake is bordered by ten summer villages and four unincorporated communities that serve year-round and seasonal residents.
The lake was originally called Woodpecker Lake until it was renamed Pigeon Lake in 1858. The establishment of Pigeon Lake Indian Reserve in 1896 marked an important shift in how the region was organized and used.
The name comes from a Cree word for pigeon, which remains central to the identity of surrounding settlements. Summer villages and communities along the shores have shaped how locals and visitors experience leisure and gathering by the water.
The lake offers activities throughout the year, with boating and fishing in summer and ice fishing and snowmobiling in winter. Multiple villages and communities around the shore provide various facilities and amenities for different interests.
More than 2,300 private cottages dot the shoreline, making it one of Alberta's most popular recreation areas. This dense concentration of summer homes has shaped it into a favored destination for families and water enthusiasts.
