The Amarillo Museum of Art houses a collection of over 1,200 artworks including American and European paintings, sculptures, and contemporary pieces. The works fill gallery spaces where paintings hang on walls and sculptures sit on pedestals.
The museum opened in 1972 in a 32,000-square-foot building designed by architect Edward Durell Stone on the Amarillo College campus. An endowment fund established by Betty Bivins Childers brought the museum to fruition, and the facilities were dedicated to her when they opened. The college owns the structure and pays the director's salary, while additional funding comes from the Texas Arts Commission and grants.
The museum's Asian art gallery holds a permanent collection of more than 300 artifacts gathered and donated by Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price of Amarillo. The museum also schedules special days with live music and refreshments, and it is a member of the Texas Association of Museums.
The museum stands at 2200 S. Van Buren Street on the Amarillo College campus, with parking east of the building on S. Van Buren Street. Admission is free. It opens Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., and stays closed on Mondays.
The museum's Price Gallery of Asian Art holds a permanent collection of more than 300 artifacts gathered and donated by Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price of Amarillo. An outdoor sculpture collection stands on the museum grounds.
