Brenham, Pallasite meteorite in Kiowa County, Kansas, US.
The Brenham meteorite is a pallasite containing yellowish olivine crystals distributed throughout a nickel-iron metal matrix, creating a distinctive natural composite structure. This celestial object traveled through space for billions of years before reaching Earth and fragmenting across the Kansas landscape.
Initial discovery occurred in 1882 when a farmer first encountered this fallen object in Kansas, with additional fragments surfacing across subsequent decades. A particularly large mass was uncovered in 1949, marking an important recovery in meteorite research history.
Multiple museums across the United States maintain collections of Brenham specimens, enabling scientific research and public education about meteorites.
A large specimen called The Space Wanderer can be examined at The Big Well museum in Greensburg, Kansas. Most visitors find it easier to see this meteorite in a museum setting rather than searching at the original discovery locations.
A remarkably large fragment was discovered in 2005 weighing around 650 kilograms, making it one of the largest known Brenham pieces ever found. This more recent discovery demonstrates that significant fragments can still emerge more than a century after initial findings.
