Nuyaka Mission, Historical mission and school site in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, United States
Nuyaka Mission is a historic mission and school complex in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma that housed several structures on its grounds. The site contained a chapel, classrooms, a superintendent's residence, and separate buildings where students and teachers lived.
The Presbyterian Church founded Nuyaka Mission in 1884 as a boarding school for Creek Indian children at the request of the Creek Indian Council. The school represented part of a broader church effort to educate young members of the Creek Nation.
The site takes its name from the nearby Creek town of Nuyaka, which comes from how Creek speakers pronounced New York during historical treaty discussions. This naming reflects the close ties between the mission and the local Creek community.
The mission site is located on McKeown Road near N 120 Road, roughly 16 miles (26 kilometers) west of where US Route 75 meets State Highway 56. The site is best reached by car since the area is rural and scattered.
In 1936, E.E. Mount purchased and preserved the property from deterioration before it passed to the Nuyaka Homecoming Association and Historical Society in 2003. This private stewardship helped ensure the buildings and history of the place survived to the present day.
