Glenn Pool Oil Reserve, Historical oil reserve in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States.
Glenn Pool Oil Reserve is a major petroleum field in the Tulsa area that spreads across thousands of acres and produces crude oil through numerous wells. The oil moves through an extensive pipeline network connecting all the production sites across the land.
In November 1905, oil was discovered here when Robert Galbreath and Frank Chesley struck petroleum at about 1,500 meters depth. This find triggered Oklahoma's first major oil development and established the region as an industrial center.
The oil discovery here turned Tulsa into a major petroleum hub and brought sudden wealth to Creek Indians who owned the land. This rapid economic shift shaped the region and transformed countless lives in just a few years.
The area is privately owned agricultural land that remains actively managed, so visitors should be aware that most of the site is not open to the public. It is best to inquire locally about any accessible viewpoints or interpretive areas before visiting.
In the early years, oil was stored in open earth pits, leading to absurdly low prices where it sold for 25 cents per barrel even though production costs 30 cents. This economic contradiction shows how rapidly the industry expanded and how little the oil was initially worth.
