Lingiari, Electoral division in Northern Territory, Australia
Lingiari is an electoral division for Australia's House of Representatives located in the Northern Territory, covering roughly 1.35 million square kilometers. It ranks as the second-largest federal electorate in the country and includes remote islands in addition to mainland territory.
The division was established on December 21, 2000, when the former Division of Northern Territory was split into two separate electoral constituencies. This division aimed to provide improved representation for the vast and sparsely populated region.
The name honors Vincent Lingiari, a Gurindji activist who fought for Indigenous rights and political representation in Australia. It reflects the importance of Aboriginal communities in shaping the region's identity.
The region is sparsely populated with many remote Indigenous communities spread across vast distances. During elections, mobile voting teams travel throughout the area to ensure residents in isolated locations can cast their ballots.
The electoral boundaries extend far beyond the mainland and encompass Christmas Island and the Cocos Keeling Islands in the Indian Ocean. These distant territories lie thousands of kilometers away but represent a substantial portion of the division.
