Kingdom of Whydah, Historical West African kingdom in coastal Benin.
The Kingdom of Whydah was a West African state located on the coast of present-day Benin, stretching roughly 64 kilometers along the shoreline and extending about 40 kilometers inland. The capital city of Savi functioned as the center of royal authority and economic activity.
The realm emerged and flourished between the 16th and 18th centuries as one of the dominant commercial and military powers along the West African coast. Its eventual destruction by the Kingdom of Dahomey marked the end of a long period of regional dominance.
The society followed Yoruba traditions, with a monarchy system where priests and priestesses held substantial influence in community decisions and religious practices.
Visitors can explore archaeological remains and museums in and around Savi, where exhibits document the realm's past. Local guides offer contextual information to help understand the historical sites.
Under King Haffon's rule, the kingdom developed into the second-largest slave port, where thousands of captured individuals were sold monthly to European traders.
