Jelep La, Mountain pass between Sikkim and Tibet Autonomous Region, India and China
Jelep La is a mountain pass located at 4,221 meters elevation that connects East Sikkim with Tibet. The pass runs through a relatively level section of the eastern Himalayas, making it a natural corridor through the high mountains.
The pass served as a major trade route between India and Tibet until the Sino-Indian border conflict in 1962 led to its closure. This interruption ended centuries of commercial exchange that had flowed through this mountain corridor.
The name comes from Tibetan language, with some sources translating it as 'the level pass' and others suggesting a link to shepherd traditions.
The best time to visit is from May through September when weather conditions are stable and road conditions are safest. Winter months bring snow and make access difficult or impossible.
The pass offers two distinct routes: one passes through Changu Lake area from Gangtok, while another follows an ancient trading path from Kalimpong. Each route reveals different perspectives on the mountain landscape and its historical connections.
