Ura Monastery

Ura Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Ura Gewog, Bhutan, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters. The two-story structure contains a main hall decorated with statues and painted murals depicting Buddhist figures.

The monastery was founded in 1200 by Nyöton Thrulzhik Chöjé of the Nyö Clan. The current building dates from 1986 and replaced an earlier temple that previously occupied this site.

The monastery serves as a living center of Buddhist practice where monks engage in daily devotions and philosophical study. Visitors can observe how religious life continues through traditional rituals that shape the rhythm of each day.

The monastery is located approximately 48 kilometers from district offices and can be reached via roads connecting villages throughout Ura Gewog. Plan your visit during warmer months when mountain roads are more easily navigable.

The monastery preserves ancient relics and traditional musical instruments used in religious ceremonies. These objects reveal how craftwork and spiritual practice have been intertwined across centuries.
