Punchiná Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric power station in San Carlos, Colombia
Punchiná Dam is an embankment dam and hydroelectric power station across the Guatapé River near San Carlos. The facility operates eight Pelton turbines for electricity generation with an underground powerhouse situated approximately 400 meters below ground level.
Construction of the dam began in 1979 with World Bank support and proceeded through two completion stages. The first generation phase was finished in 1984, followed by the second phase in 1987.
The development of Punchiná Dam transformed the Antioquia Department into an energy production center, affecting local communities and their relationship with the Guatapé River.
The site is accessible by road through local routes in the region. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and wear appropriate clothing for the Andean elevation.
Water from the reservoir travels through long tunnels before reaching the turbines and is then directed through separate pathways to another river. This underground infrastructure allows the facility to generate power while managing water flow efficiently in mountainous terrain.
