Sal

Sal is an island territory in the Barlavento Islands of Cape Verde marked by white sandy beaches and flat terrain. The coastline stretches for about 30 kilometers with the highest point reaching only 20 meters above sea level.

The island was named after extensive salt deposits found in Pedra de Lume and Santa Maria that fueled an active salt industry until the late 19th century. These natural resources shaped the island's economy and settlement patterns for generations.
