São Nicolau, Mountainous island in Barlavento archipelago, Cape Verde.
São Nicolau is a mountainous island in the Barlavento archipelago with Monte Gordo as its highest peak and varied landscapes of valleys and coastal areas. The main settlement of Ribeira Brava features colonial buildings arranged along winding streets that climb through the mountain terrain.
The island was discovered in 1461 by Portuguese navigator Diogo Afonso, with initial settlements at Porto de Lapa on the coast. Pirate raids forced residents to move inland, where Ribeira Brava eventually developed as the main settlement.
The name São Nicolau refers to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of seafarers, reflecting the island's maritime identity and heritage. Visitors notice how local life flows through the narrow streets and squares of Ribeira Brava, where residents gather and work in the traditional setting.
Travelers reach the island via Preguiça Airport near Ribeira Brava or by ferry from Tarrafal de São Nicolau port. The best time to visit is between November and July when weather conditions are most stable.
An early school, the Seminário-Liceu, was founded in 1866 and made the island an important educational hub in the region. This institution attracted students from other islands and shaped cultural development across the archipelago.
