Morne aux Diables

Morne aux Diables is a dormant volcano in northern Dominica with a conical shape rising to approximately 861 meters. The slopes feature andesite rock formations, and sulfur springs emerge at several points along the mountain's flanks.

This volcano formed during periods of ancient volcanic activity and has remained dormant since the Pleistocene era. A minor seismic event between 2009 and 2010 indicated that geological activity continues beneath the surface.

The peak holds significance in local geography and serves as a landmark visible from surrounding communities. People from nearby villages have long used the mountain as a navigation point and gathering destination.

The hike requires sturdy footwear, water, and weather-appropriate clothing for the several-hour journey on the trail. Dense vegetation covers the slopes and provides shade, though solid boots are essential for navigating the uneven paths.

The andesite rock formations on this mountain display clear layers from different volcanic events, visible like pages in a geological record. Visitors can observe these distinct strata and gain insight into how the mountain built itself over millennia.
