Morne Diablotins, Stratovolcano in northern Dominica.
Morne Diablotins is a stratovolcano in northern Dominica and the island's highest peak at approximately 1,447 meters. Its summit features multiple merged lava domes with steep slopes throughout the mountain.
The volcano experienced significant seismic swarms in 1841 and 1893 during the 19th century. Its most recent eruption occurred roughly 30,000 years ago.
The mountain carries a French name meaning 'small devils' and shares its name with the black-capped petrel, a seabird that nests in the high-altitude rocky areas of the peak.
Hiking the mountain requires a guided tour through the national park with adequate water supplies and proper hiking gear for the steep terrain. Make sure to start early in the day to allow enough time for the challenging climb.
The peak contains at least five merged lava domes that formed through volcanic activity long ago. Hot springs flow from different elevations on the mountainside and extend toward the nearby coast.
