The Spanish established Salvaleón de Higüey in 1506 after conquering the Taino chiefdom, receiving its official coat of arms from Seville in 1508.
The Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey represents the religious heritage of the province, inaugurated in 1971 as a national monument.
