Lamandau Nature Reserve, Protected area in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
Lamandau Nature Reserve is a tropical forest area in Central Kalimantan with varied woodland habitats spread across the landscape. These different forest types provide homes for many animal species found naturally on Borneo.
The reserve was established to care for injured and orphaned great apes and return them to the wild. This rehabilitation work over recent decades transformed it into a key location for protecting this species.
The local communities here use the forest in ways passed down through generations, sharing their ecological knowledge with younger people. This traditional relationship with the land remains visible in how people move through and care for the surroundings.
Visitors must obtain permits and go with an authorized guide before entering, as the area is not open for independent exploration. It is best to find out in advance what the current entry conditions are to plan a smooth visit.
The reserve is known for its work with orangutans through targeted rehabilitation and release back into the forest. Many of the apes here have learned to live independently in the wild again and help rebuild the natural population.
