Sabilal Muhtadin Grand Mosque, Islamic religious center in Banjarmasin, Indonesia.
Sabilal Muhtadin Grand Mosque is a mosque in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, and one of the largest in Indonesia. The building rises over two floors and combines local Banjarese design with Islamic architectural traditions.
Before the mosque was built in the 1970s, this site was occupied by a Dutch colonial fortress that had stood here for generations. Replacing it with a place of worship marked a deep change in what this land meant to the people of Banjarmasin.
The mosque serves as a gathering place where the local community comes together for prayer and religious celebrations throughout the year. It reflects the spiritual values that define daily life in this region.
The complex is open throughout the day and can be visited outside of prayer times, when it tends to be quieter and easier to look around. Visitors should cover their shoulders and legs, and prayer areas are separated by gender during worship.
Right next to the mosque, a public park runs along the Martapura River and draws locals who come to walk, rest, and take photos at any hour of the day. The riverside setting makes this one of the few places in the city where a religious building and an open green space sit side by side.
