The Last Judgment, Renaissance fresco in Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

The Last Judgment covers the entire altar wall of the Sistine Chapel, measuring 1370 centimeters in height and 1220 centimeters in width.

Pope Paul III commissioned Michelangelo to paint this fresco in 1535, and the work was unveiled on October 31, 1541, on All Saints' Eve.

The fresco depicts Christ's second coming, with figures ascending to Heaven and descending to darkness, following Catholic theological doctrine of final judgment.

The restoration work from 1980 to 1999 removed dark layers of dirt and glue, revealing the original bright colors and details of the fresco.

The painting incorporates mythological figure Charon from Greek mythology, who transports condemned souls across the river in Christian context.
