St. Peter's Dome, Renaissance dome at St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
The dome of St. Peter's rises 136 meters above Vatican City, featuring 16 windows around its drum and intricate mosaic decorations across multiple levels.
Michelangelo designed the dome structure in 1547, and after his death in 1564, his student Giacomo della Porta completed the construction in 1590.
The dome displays 96 religious figures, including representations of popes, Christ, Mary, angels, and saints, arranged in six ascending levels of mosaic artwork.
Visitors can access the dome daily from 8:00 to 18:00 in summer months and until 17:00 in winter, with entrance fees of 8 euros for stairs or 10 euros for elevator.
The base of the drum contains text from Matthew's Gospel in 2-meter-high black letters against a gold background, illuminated by natural light through 16 windows.
