Arlberg, Mountain pass in Sankt Anton am Arlberg, Austria

Arlberg is a mountain pass at 1,793 meters that connects Vorarlberg and Tyrol through the Austrian Alps. A road tunnel allows year-round crossing, while a large ski resort with extensive slopes and lift systems spreads across the surrounding slopes.

The mountain pass served as an important trade route between regions for centuries until a road tunnel completed in 1978 transformed travel through the area. This modern infrastructure turned the location into a key transportation hub and enabled the growth of today's ski resort.

The pass marks a language boundary between Alemannic and Bavarian dialects, reflecting the diverse heritage of Alpine communities on either side. You can notice these linguistic differences today when moving between the two regions.

The area is a winter sports center with slopes suitable for different skill levels. In summer, hikers can explore mountain trails and enjoy the Alpine environment.

The pass separates several mountain ranges with different geological origins between south and north. This natural boundary shapes not only the landscape but also the people and ways of life on both sides.
