Haldensee, Alpine lake in Tannheimer Valley, Austria
Haldensee is an alpine lake nestled between the municipalities of Grän and Nesselwängle in Tannheimer Valley at 1,124 meters elevation. The water covers 77 hectares and reaches 28 meters deep, presenting a clear surface surrounded by mountain slopes and meadows.
During the Middle Ages, the lake area was part of a crucial salt trade route that connected Hall to Lake Constance through mountain passes. This trade corridor shaped the region's prosperity and importance for many centuries.
The name comes from the surrounding mountain landscape, and today it serves as a gathering place where visitors and locals swim, sail, or simply walk around the shore. The bathing facility with solar-heated water has made it a popular spot for families and water enthusiasts in the region.
A walking trail circles the lake starting from the Haller parking area with several viewing spots along the way. Winter visitors can enjoy ice skating and skiing activities nearby.
When winter arrives, the water freezes thick enough for ice skating and curling, transforming the lake into a winter sports venue. This dramatic seasonal shift from summer swimming to winter activities is one of the lake's defining characteristics.
