Kaisertal, Mountain valley in Tyrol, Austria
Kaisertal is a mountain valley in Tyrol located between the Zahmer Kaiser and Wilder Kaiser mountain chains. The landscape is shaped by the Sparchenklamm gorge, where the Kaiserbach stream flows between steep rock walls.
The valley remained the last inhabited region in Austria without road access until 2008, accessible only via 280 steps for many decades. The first permanent road with an 800-meter tunnel finally enabled vehicle access for residents.
The valley contains St. Anthony's Chapel and traditional mountain farms like Pfandlhof and Veitenhof, which shape the settlement's character today. These buildings reflect how people have lived and worked in this remote location for generations.
Road access through the 800-meter tunnel is restricted to residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles to protect the natural environment. Visitors should check conditions beforehand, as the route is not freely accessible and walking alternatives over steps exist.
Before road construction, local farmers transported vehicles in dismantled parts over the steps or had them delivered by helicopter. This creative solution shows the ingenuity that remote isolation required of people living here.
