Barmer Spitze, Alpine summit in Sankt Jakob in Defereggen, Austria.
Barmer Spitze is an alpine summit that marks the border between East Tyrol in Austria and South Tyrol in Italy, forming part of the Rieserferner mountain group. The peak rises to approximately 3,200 meters and can be approached from valleys on both the Austrian and Italian sides.
The peak became part of the High Tauern National Park when it was established in 1981, marking a turning point for protecting these Eastern Alpine landscapes. This designation helped safeguard the region's fragile ecosystems for the long term.
The mountain sits where Austrian and Italian alpine traditions meet, drawing climbers from both sides of the border who share similar mountain practices. The routes and shelters reflect how both communities value high-altitude mountaineering in their regions.
The climbing season is best from June through September when snow coverage is minimal and the trails are dry. Climbers should plan their approach depending on which side they start from, and proper alpine equipment and experience are essential for this ascent.
The Barmer Hütte shelter sits roughly 1,510 meters east of the summit and provides climbers with a key rest point on their way up the mountain. This refuge serves as an important staging base for mountaineers attempting the ascent from the Austrian side.
