Bärenschützklamm, Natural monument in Pernegg an der Mur, Austria
The Bärenschützklamm is a slot canyon near Pernegg an der Mur with steep limestone walls towering over 300 meters high. The path winds past several waterfalls and strange rock formations that line the creek bed.
The gorge was developed by the Graz Alpine Club in 1901, when the first wooden bridges and 164 ladders were installed to make the route passable. This development marked the start of modern use of the slot canyon.
Local Alpine Association sections maintain the gorge's infrastructure, continuing a tradition of preservation that spans more than a century.
The path is well equipped with handrails and fixed steps, but requires good footwear and a head for heights for steep sections. The best time to visit is from May to October, when water levels are low enough and the steps are safely passable.
The geology of the gorge stretches back over 400 million years and shows karst springs, caves, and bowl-shaped basins. These geological features formed through long-term water and erosion processes that shaped the landscape.
