Salmhütte, Mountain hut in Heiligenblut, Austria
Salmhutte is a mountain hut located on the southern slope of Grossglockner at about 2,600 meters elevation with views across Hohe Tauern National Park. The building has sleeping quarters, a restaurant, and a terrace overlooking the mountains.
The hut was founded in 1799 and served climbers for over two centuries. In 2017 it underwent significant modernization with new facilities and an expanded terrace.
The hut serves traditional regional dishes prepared following local recipes with ingredients from nearby suppliers. Guests gather here to share meals and experience the mountain hut culture that has been part of the climbing lifestyle for many generations.
The hut is accessible between June and September via several hiking trails from lower starting points. Cash is the only payment method accepted for meals and overnight stays.
The hut received the Environmental Quality Seal for Alpine Association huts in 2011, recognizing its commitment to sustainable mountain tourism. This award shows the operation maintains high standards for environmental protection in the high mountain region.
