Schattenspitze

Schattenspitze is a summit in the Silvretta Alps rising to 3,202 meters with steep slopes on all sides. Three glaciers sit at the base of the peak and create the challenging terrain that climbers must navigate.

The peak was first documented in an 1912 expedition by Karl Blodig and Edward Theodore Compton through the Ochsentaler Glacier. The route they established through the glacier remains the standard path for climbers to reach the summit today.

The name refers to the mountain's position among taller peaks that cast shadows across its slopes during the day. Visitors notice this shadowing effect especially in the morning hours when surrounding mountains block the light.

Most climbers begin from the Wiesbadener Hütte mountain refuge at 2,443 meters and follow marked paths across the glacial terrain. Warm clothing and specialized gear are important because weather changes quickly and the ground itself requires technical skill to cross safely.

The peak ranks as the sixth highest mountain in Bezirk Bludenz and rises only about 146 meters above its nearby neighbors. This relatively small elevation advantage over such prominent surrounding peaks makes it a surprising choice among climbers in the region.
